Your calling is calling

 If you get a chance, check out my favorite part of my study this week: What is Your Calling In Life It's a talk by Jeffrey Thompson.  I'm not sure who he is, but he makes amazing points.  My little brother and I both suffer from varying degrees of what I like to call the "Pippin Complex."  It's a theory based on the musical Pippin by Stephen Shwartz in which the main character, Pippin, is always looking "for my corner of the sky" because "eagles belong where they can fly." He thinks of himself as extraordinary, and that "when you're extraordinary, you need to do extraordinary things."   He tries being a king, being a scholar, being a drunk, being a lover/partner/father, and no matter what he tries, nothing is ever "extraordinary" enough for him.  He's special, therefore he must have a special calling. However, chasing this calling came at the expense of his own happiness and nearly at the expense of his very life.  ...

Social Innovation Reflection 1 - Wary

 I have begun my Social Innovations class with BYU-Idaho.  I wasn't sure what to expect and still after reading and watching the intro videos and articles, I'm not clear on what this has to do with my Child and Family Advocacy certificate. Perhaps it is meant to connect me to resources and an innovative mindset.  I was instructed to watch a few videos - but they were mostly inspirational music and images of inspirational people.  One video had more information in it than that, but I still wasn't stirred to any action. But that's very likely just my personality. I try to avoid that which other people hype. I refused to read Harry Potter until years after it was released and the hype had died down for a while (right before the movie rights were acquired and the hype started back up). These videos felt like hype to me.  I understand the value of emotionally charged music and quick-cut images to ignite a feeling of excitement that mimics passion, but I am wary of su...
